Why must they destroy good Animals? I understand the need for destroying some becuase they are unfit to do so as they have been used as fighting dogs or similar and are agressive towards humans.

But surely those who pass some simple tests to show that they are friendly and of no threat could be used and rehomed in other ways. For example train some of them as sniffer dogs for the police and the customs and excise teams, then train others as seeing eye dogs and assistance dogs for the blind and disabled.

I know I would love a dog at the moment but can not afford to have one due to the costs of buying such a dog. as the good ones are anywhere between £300 and £1,000 in my country (England) to purchase a good dog that has had all the tests to ensure no problems with hip dysplasia and things like that in later life and I have terminal cancer but would love say a german Shepheard pup to train up and leave to protect my home and property as well as my family after my death.

There are a great many old and elderly people out there who could and would also love a dog or cat or some othe animal as a companion and a pet who can and could easily afford to pay for their food etc

I have watched a programme called Cell Dogs where trustee prisoners are used to train such animals for them to be used by the police and other organisations so why not have this world wide and have the prisoners train these animals in such ways.

So why not have others that help the communities and society in general in other ways and then give the prisoners some other kind of rewards to aim for by doing such things. This in turn then would encourge better behaviour among the prisoners.

Or give them a skill set they can use or offer to an employer once released. In this way then the animals are not put to death for no need so the animals win, also the prisoners win ,the prison officers and other personel are at less risk of attack so they win, and society and the population wins. Also as a result of haveing offenders returned to the streets a better person and with skills and qualifacations they can use to help and better society and make it less likely that they will go back to doing crimes.
