News from the US: Want to watch a great success story in the making?

It’s called “Residents Must Spay, Neuter their Cats & Dogs

– Clark County introduces spay and neuter laws”

This film shows how Clark County Nevada has created some really great ideas to stem the flow of animals in their community.

DRP Comment:

What is stopping us doing this here? Why do we have to lag the US by ten years?

Actions you can take:

Lobby your Council to introduce better desexing regimes. Low cost de-sexing clinics and public education is the way to go.

It’s interesting that they say Clarke County is following in the ‘successful’ footsteps of Los Angeles… when the experience there has been slightly less than stellar:

In the city of Los Angeles where they passed one of the most draconian mandatory spay/neuter laws in America (requiring virtually every dog and cat in the city to be sterilized by the age of 4 months), they saw their kill numbers go up 31%, after more than five years of steady decline in shelter killing.

Information on year two of their ordinance can be found here.

What’s also interesting, is the US national association, the ASPCA, doesn’t support mandatory desexing:

The ASPCA is not aware of any credible evidence demonstrating a statistically significant enhancement in the reduction of shelter intake or euthanasia as a result of the implementation of a mandatory spay/neuter law.

I think if we’re going to be discussing modern thinking and lamenting being ‘behind them times’ – it would be a great opportunity to skip those steps the US have found don’t actually work. Mandatory desexing has failed to reduce the kill rate in any shelter in the US… ever.

Read some more from an excellent bloggers on the topic here:

If it worked, the internet would be alive with the case studies of the No Kill communities that have used MD to empty their shelters. Thoughtful bloggers would LOVE to be singing their successes this from the rooftops. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work.

The truth is, if you dig a little deeper, the only people promoting MD are those people who can’t yet believe that supporting pet owners is the way forward. Stuck in a punishment mindset, believing their own community is too irresponsible, too stupid and too thoughtless to ever be able to make good pet ownership decisions.
